Router tuning: start here, always
It is free, it addresses the most common causes, and it is the only category that fixes problems originating inside your home. Bufferbloat alone accounts for an enormous share of "my ping spikes randomly" complaints, and SQM eliminates it at no cost.

Game boosters: a different road, not a faster one
A booster routes your game traffic through its own network of servers instead of letting your ISP choose the path. Because those providers run their own links and pick routes for latency rather than for cost, the path can end up shorter in time even when it is longer in kilometres.
It is worth being blunt about the mechanism, because the marketing rarely is: a booster does not increase your speed and does not reduce physical distance. It substitutes one route for another. Everything follows from that.
When it genuinely helps
- Your ISP routes traffic to the game's region indirectly — a detour through another country is common.
- A transit link on the path is congested at peak hours and drops packets.
- You play on servers in a region your ISP peers with badly.
- Your route is unstable and changes during a session, producing jitter rather than steady latency.
When it will do nothing
- Your ping problem is Wi-Fi. The route was never the issue.
- You have bufferbloat. The queue is on your own router, before the booster sees anything.
- The server is simply far away and your route is already direct. There is nothing left to optimise.
- Your line is saturated. Rerouting a congested uplink does not decongest it.
If your current route is already close to direct, the improvement can be a handful of milliseconds — or none. This is not a defect in the product; it is what "changing the route" means when the existing route is fine. That is exactly why running a traceroute first matters: it tells you whether there is anything to gain before you spend money.
Will it get you banned?
Routing software of this kind changes the network path and does not touch the game client, its memory, or its files. That is a different category of thing from what anti-cheat systems look for. It is worth checking a specific game's rules if you are worried, but rerouting is not in the same class as software that modifies the game itself.
VPNs: usually the wrong tool for this
A VPN encrypts your traffic and sends it through a server elsewhere. Encryption costs a little processing time, and the detour adds distance. In the normal case a VPN adds latency — often 10–30 ms, more if the exit server is far away.
There is a narrow exception. If your ISP is actively throttling or badly routing your game's traffic specifically, a VPN can bypass that and come out ahead. This is real but uncommon, and it is a side effect rather than the design goal. Consumer VPNs optimise for privacy, server count and streaming access; latency is not what their networks are built for.
Use a VPN when you want privacy or region access. If the goal is lower ping, it is the wrong category of product.
Choosing, in three questions

Does your ping get worse when the connection is busy?

If none of the three fits and your ping is simply high because the server is thousands of kilometres away, the answer is a closer server. No product changes the speed of light.

A routing problem in the transit network is the one thing on this page you cannot fix yourself and cannot fix for free. That is the case where trying a booster is a rational decision rather than a hopeful one.
